The Stack Effect is a natural process that occurs in all homes, but has a greater impact on homes with crawlspaces. As warm air rises up through the home, into the attic and out of the home, a suction or vacuum is created that pulls air from the lowest levels of the home. In homes with a crawlspace, this vacuum pulls the crawlspace air - and everything in it - into the living space above. So, if you have muck and mold in your crawlspace air, well, you have muck and mold in the air in your home. In fact, as much as 50% to 60% of the air in your home - AND EVERYTHING IN IT - comes directly from your crawlspace! Do you know what’s in yours??
A junky or cluttered crawlspace can be a haven for pests and rodents, even if you keep it dry. And these unwanted guests are shedding and pooping and peeing under your home. As these contaminants break down, the particles become airborne. A clean crawlspace means a healthier home.
Moisture is a home’s worst enemy. It leads to mold, to pests, to termites, to warped floors, to rotting subfloors. It leads to costly home repairs and costly health issues. A moisture barrier is just that - a (typically) polyethylene barrier that keeps moisture in the ground, and out of your floor and subfloor.
Sometimes water is present in various quantities and at various points under your home. In this case, French drains can carry it to a single location to be pumped out. When combined with a sump pump, sitting water under your home doesn’t stand a chance!
“It‘s not the heat - it’s the humidity!” Sitting water is obvious. But what may not be so obvious, is the relative humidity under your home. The higher the humidity, the more moisture being absorbed by your floor and subfloor. A dehumidifier pulls that moisture out of the air and expels it from your crawlspace, making it dryer and healthier.
The best thing you can do for your crawlspace is seal it up - or “encapsulate“ it. This transforms the dark, damp, unhealthy space under your home into an insulated and conditioned air space much like the home above. This saves on energy costs and provides untold health benefits as you take control of the environment under your home!
If you have a damp crawlspace, you almost certainly have mold under your home. And if you look, you will very likely see it growing on the wooden subfloor and supports just beneath your feet. We can treat the wood and eliminate both the mold AND the conditions allowing it to thrive! We are Certified Mold Specialists under the International Restoration Institute.
